Are ice dams forming on your roof? With heavy snowfall a lot of roofs in Montgomery County Maryland might be in serious danger of developing ice dams from the accumulated snow on their rooftops. Usually homes with multiple roof lines like split style homes, or homes with a garage or addition are in more danger, particularly from snow drifts that can easily form ice dams and roof leaks. If you notice snow drifts on your roof call 301-216-9675 before ice dams form and water starts leaking in to your home! With temperatures hovering around freezing any snow accumulations over 6" can easily cause an ice dam creating thousands of dollars in damages to your home! When ice dams form, water builds up behind a wall of ice and allows water to penetrate through the roofing inside the exterior walls. It's not uncommon to see extensive water damages on every level of the home, including the basement! What should you do if your roof has a buildup of snow like the homes in these photos? Clearing the accumulated snow from the roofs is the first step! Using a roof rake try to clear as much snow off the roof as you can, but don't walk on your roof or use a ladder! If you don't own a roof rake, hire a professional roof repair contractor that has experience clearing roofs and fixing roof leaks. Please do not attempt to work on ladders or on roofs covered with snow, I can guarantee that you will slip and possibly fall off of your roof and land you in a wheelchair or worse, dead!
Things to look for: If you notice any of these items there is probably an ice dam on your roof, and the problems are about to get worse. The water will start entering the exterior walls of your home and then it will begin damaging your ceilings and drywall starting at the top floor and sometimes into lower levels. Before these damages occur clear the snow off the edges of your roof and remove the ice dam. I suggest hiring a contractor to do this, working on roofs and ladders that are covered with snow is VERY dangerous, and you can cause extensive damage to the roofing if you don't know what your doing. The good news is, once the snow and ice is removed the leaks will stop almost immediately. On Channel 9 news and Channel 5 news our president, Henry Bockman discussed the causes of ice dams and the problems many home owners are facing with the extremely heavy amounts of snow we currently have on roofs. To prevent water from coming into your home from ice dams, the snow and ice must be cleared from your roof to remove the ice dam blockage. Please do not attempt to do this yourself! This type of work is extremely dangerous if you don't know what your doing and you can cause significant damage to your roof!
